Diversity in CALS

UW Madison College of Agricultural and Life Sciences Diversity Program

Diversity in CALS

The world is an ever changing place, and there is a need in our society to recognize and embrace the concept that this generation of students will create the face of the future. The College of Agricultural and Life Sciences recognizes the importance of preparing these students to have a positive impact by providing a quality educational and social experience.

CALS also understands that this “face of the future” will embody the growing ethnic and cultural diversity in our society, and we embrace the opportunity of serving students from many different backgrounds.

    This effort includes:

  • Promoting awareness and understanding of diversity issues within the College and the University.
  • Increasing the student of color population within the College, and providing awareness of the wealth of career and education opportunities found in our programs.
  • Assisting students through resources such as career and academic advising, with personal attention from a dedicated staff.

Students will have the opportunity to work with a faculty or professional advisor, which creates more interaction with the people who will be instrumental in providing inroads for career opportunities and internships, as well as lab and field research experiences. Additionally, we assist and encourage students to become connected to campus resources such as GUTS, the Physics Learning Center, the Math Tutorial Program, and the Chemistry Learning Center.  Students are strongly encouraged to become engaged in the CALS community through participation in student council, CALS Honors, and student organizations, such as Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Related Sciences (MANRRS).

MANRRS is a national society organized for charitable, educational, and scientific purposes. This student organization is open to all undergraduate and graduate students interested in increasing the number of students studying the life sciences, agriculture, and related fields, developing leadership qualities, and learning about opportunities for recruitment and placement of underrepresented minorities in professional positions. The CALS chapter of MANRRS is active and meets twice per month. For more information regarding MANRRS, contact chapter President J'Mag Karbeah.

For more information or assistance, please contact Tom Browne, the assistant dean for minority affairs at 608-262-3288.
