Recreation

There is no doubt that taking courses at the University of Wisconsin Madison can be an enriching experience. That being said, one cannot study all the time. Luckily for students at the UW, the greater Madison area presents a host of opportunities for rest, relaxation, and fun. You will find that there are a wide variety of shops, bars and restaurants on and around campus, and that the nearby State Street is a great spot to take a walk, listen to live music, or go out with your friends at night. The University also offers many recreational opportunities and athletic facilities for students looking to have fun and stay healthy.

Madison is a very active city. Take a break from your studies and enjoy the many extracurricular activities that we have to offer!

University Facilities

You'd be crazy not to take advantage of this beautiful part of the University. Located along the shores of Lake Mendota , the Howard Temin Lakeshore Path is a picturesque way to traverse the campus. It's ideal for walking, running, biking, and even roller-blading along the paved section past the Kronshage dorms. The Path extends all the way to the entrance of Picnic Point and beyond. Picnic Point itself has an excellent trail system. Excerpted from the Choose your own adventure Handbook.

Recreational Activities Programs

Besides the recreational activities that the University offers, we highly recommend that you try to attend a UW football, basketball, hockey or volleyball game, as the University of Wisconsin 's sports programs (and their fans) are considered some of the best in the nation.

These athletic programs inspire fierce loyalty from many in Madison and the state of Wisconsin . They also encompass many of the great traditions of the University. One of the biggest traditions at the University is the "Fifth Quarter." After every home football game, the UW Marching Band plays for the Student Section of the stadium, sometimes for as long as an hour. Students in the stands dance the polka — a traditional Wisconsin dance.
