Assessment of Milwaukee's Food Security

The Hunger Task Force of Milwaukee is collaborating with the Center for Urban Initiatives and Research at UW-Milwaukee on two interrelated research studies. These studies focus on individuals and families in central-city Milwaukee.

The first study involves telephone interviews with 500 randomly selected, households. Questions will focus on (1) shopping patterns; (2) frequency of shopping; (3) size and type of store used; (4) food quality, availability, and prices; (5) modes of transportation to food outlets; and (6) challenges faced in obtaining quality, affordable food. The second study will focus on families using emergency food programs and/or meal programs. Fifteen focus groups, in ten different food pantries and five different meal programs, looked at a variety of issues related to food systems and family nutrition such as (1) frequency of use; (2) strengths and weaknesses of programs; (3) challenges faced in using programs, and (4) ideas to improve access for disadvantaged individuals and families.
