Contempory Issues in the Food SystemDepartment of Agricultural and Applied Economics faculty at UW-Madison in collaboration with community partners are developing a new food-systems course for undergraduate students. This course is based on the WFSP vision that "...citizens, faculty, staff, and students learn from each other and work together... "so that students can" ...gain an appreciation of the social responsibility associated with the opportunity for education." Innovative teaching approaches like service/experiential learning will provide opportunities for alternative ways of learning. The course is offered to students during the fall semester and will ultimately be part of the WFSP Community Scholars Program curriculum. The course will cover a range of topics starting with the students and their relationship to food. It will explore many dimensions of the food system from the farm and input supplies to the consumer. Students will have an opportunity to experience the food system through the eyes of both academics and workers in the system in a variety of on- and off-campus activities.
