Madison Food System Project

The Madison Food System (MFS) project works to draw the attention of citizens and public officials to the Madison/Dane County food system. Our purpose is threefold: (1) to increase understanding and awareness of how the food system functions in Madison and Dane County, (2) to establish partnerships and collaboration between Madison area community groups, university faculty, and students to research and take action towards a food system that is healthful, sustainable, and just for all residents of the county, and (3) to develop specific strategies for improving food security for low-income residents of Dane County.

MFS activities are intended to raise public awareness about food system issues in the Madison area; provide research support to food-system organizations in the Madison area; increase awareness about the food system in the planning field; network with individuals and organizations at the local, state, and national levels; contribute to the development of the Troy Drive Gardens Project; and establish a Madison/Dane County food policy council.

We have forged partnerships with the Community Action Coalition of Dane County, Madison-area Community Gardeners Coalition, Dane County REAP Food Group , Center for Integrated Agricultural Systems, Urban Open Space Foundation, Madison-Area Community Land Trust, Hunger Prevention Council of Dane County, Growing Power, UW Arboretum, and UW-Extension. MFS has also communicated with the Madison-area Urban Ministry, United Refugee Service, and various food pantries around the area.
